G2 are now one BO5 victory away from domestic Grand Slam
Always the same story. This Saturday, G2 Esports secured their place in the LEC 2024 Grand Final by defeating MAD Lions KOI in Munich in the Losers bracket final (3-1). On Sunday, the Samurai's will face Fnatic to complete their perfect year on the Old Continent. G2 have indeed won all three splits of the season and are now one BO5 victory away from completing the domestic League of Legends Grand Slam.
However, the evening started badly for G2, who had also been beaten by MDK earlier in the playoffs. The teammates of Rasmus “Caps” Winther - named MVP of the LEC 2024 just before the start of the series - were overwhelmed in Game 1 by a very good MAD Lions KOI team. David “Supa” Garcia had a near-perfect game with his Miss Fortune, playing many good teamfights and finishing the game with a 11/1/7 KD/A. G2 then woke up in the wake of a brilliant Martin “Yike” Sundelin. The jungler played three decisive Brand games, single-handedly taking game 2 with a 10/0/2 KD/A.
Six finals win in a row against Fnatic
But the man who has been named MVP of this match is Steven “Hans sama” Liv. Precise on his ultimates with Ashe and Jhin - only his third this year -, the Frenchman unblocked numerous situations in the last two games, notably saving Caps' lives. In particular, the AD Carry was the main architect of his side's victory in Game 3. With this result, MAD Lions are the seed 3 of the LEC at the Worlds and will go through to the play-in. G2 joins Fnatic directly in the Swiss Stage.
Tonight's winners will come into Sunday's match against Fnatic full of confidence. Not just because the German club has bounced back since losing to MDK in Season Finals, but also because G2 has won the last six finals played against the Black and Orange since 2018. This year, Europe's most successful club beat Fnatic in both the Spring Split and Summer Split finals.
