PSG Talon continue to dominate the PCS region and qualify once again for Worlds
The League of Legends 2024 World Championship kicks off in Berlin on the 25th of September. A total of 20 teams will compete to succeed T1 at the top of the Riot Games MOBA world hierarchy. On this occasion, Sheep Esports brings you a daily feature on one of the teams taking part. This September 11th, the seventh episode of our series focuses on PSG Talon, PCS champion.
Dominating the Pacific
Since their arrival in PCS in 2020, PSG Talon have quickly established themselves as the region's number-one team. They were indeed crowned champions as soon as their very first split: the 2020 Spring. Since then, the journey has continued in the same vein as with their recent victory during Summer 2024, PSG Talon clinched their 8th PCS title (out of a possible 10) in 5 years.
This latest title was the result of PSG Talon's total domination, sweeping aside all opponents who tried to stand in their way. Firstly, in the Regular Season, during which the team lost just one small game to Deep Cross Gaming, finishing first in 9-1 (series). Even more strikingly, in terms of games, PSG lost just 3 and won 19.
Once in the Playoffs, the pace remained the same, straight through to the finals with 3-0 wins over FAK and SHG. They faced the latter again in the Grand Final, this time dropping a game to win 3-1. PSG Talon thus arrive at the Worlds after a total domination over their region over the Summer Split, having lost just 4 games over the entire segment, for 28 victories.
Going global, again
PSG Talon are regulars at international events, having taken part in no fewer than 8 Worlds and MSIs since their arrival on the Summoner's Rift. Looking specifically at the Worlds, the team has taken part in the 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2024 editions. It's a team with a wealth of experience that will once again be aiming to topple its play-in opponents and book its ticket to the Main Event, after missing out last year.
Although PSG have had some good performances at Worlds, with victories over Fnatic, HLE and JDG in the group phase for example, the team still has its Achilles' heel, since it has never taken part in the Worlds Knockout Stage.
Maple, PSG Talon's roots
Maple is surely the name that rings out the most when it comes to the PCS region. With a career spanning more than 10 years, he's one of the players who has most represented the region at Worlds, particularly during his FlashWolves days, when he performed with great prowess. These Worlds will be his 8th and 3rd in a PSG shirt. And yes, although Maple signed for PSG in June 2023, he had already worn the team's jersey in the 2021 season. This return to the fold has made him a central figure in the team and one of the biggest carries. We've seen him perform very well this season. In particular, he did very well in the AD mid meta, with big games on Corki, Lucian, Zeri and Tristana. Once again, we'll have to be wary of Maple this year at Worlds, as his experience and adaptability coupled with the confidence of the Summer Split could be decisive.
The team will also be able to count on its other carry, Betty, who had perhaps an even more dominant year than his midlaner. In fact, it was these two players who pushed BLG over the edge at MSI 2024, forcing them into Game 5.
You'll find below the 5-man roster of PSG Talon:
- Huang "Azhi" Shang-Jhih
- Yu "JunJia" Chun-Chia
- Huang "Maple" Yi-Tang
- Lu "Betty" Yu-Hung
- Lin "Woody" Yu-En
