"I think with Melzhet in 1 year of playing Support I could get back to LEC"
After MAD Lions KOI's victory against G2 Esports in one of the best series of the year in LEC - League of Legends EMEA Championship -, the Spanish toplaner Alex “Myrwn” Pastor Villarejo sits down with Sheep Esports to give us some insight about how the last few weeks have been for the Spanish team.
Could you tell us more about the bootcamp in Madrid and all of its repercussions, since you seem like a completely new team?
Alex “Myrwn” Pastor Villarejo: "For me it was a different experience, because in all the teams I've been a part of, excluding Heretics, there were not many people around and in this bootcamp the place was full, you communicated all the time with people and it made the experience much more enjoyable. I don't think we lacked knowledge purely about League of Legends and we had very good games before, but we lacked to transfer our scrims games to official matches. In the bootcamp we worked through the whole mental issue, the mental block. I believe it was a very positive experience for us and it showed off in the series against G2.
Now that you mention the series against G2, how was this curiosity of yours, to try champions and rare matchups, born?
Myrwn: I don't play rare champs, I play the champs that I like to play. I have never felt like looking for rare champs. For example I got the idea of the Nidalee from a French onetrick that played a lot of Nidalee top when he was autofilled. I saw it and stole it from him.
You watch a lot of content from streamers and youtubers, don't you?
Myrwn: What I watch most are streams. I don't consider there are many high elo players right now that I enjoy watching, so I tend to watch more OTPs and currently more videos than streams. I like PzZZang a lot, who is a Yasuo OTP, Zed99 or an Akshan onetrick who I'm currently watching, that is playing Jhin top because he feels like it.
Which are the steps in between, since you get the idea up to the time you transfer the concept to Tomás "Melzhet" Campelos?
Myrwn: Well, normally I send him a Discord message. It depends on the champion. I usually explain to him, for example, that this champion has been buffed and I think he is very strong for whatever reason. I just explain it to him or I make a presentation about why I want to play it...etc.
How many scrims or SoloQ games you need with a champion, in order to be able to play him in an official match?
Myrwn: It depends on the champion, but I would say that very little in general. I had only played three SoloQ games with Yasuo before playing the Winter final. I had only played Lulu in 1vs1. I tried Nidalee five games before playing it oficially. There are champions which I need to play more, maybe playing Singed would take me ten games instead of just three.
Transferring this to the series with G2, do you have the picks thought out and discussed with the staff before the draft, or do they come up during it in an improvised way?
Myrwn: Talking about the series, we had the idea of what they were going to pick. Whenever we play G2. I think we have a good read on what they want to play and we tend to be pretty comfortable in the draft, no matter if we win or lose. The game that lastpicked Smolder for instance, we weren't so sure whether to take Smolder or not, but I told them to trust me and it worked out. In the last game, I was asked to blind pick and I said Nidalee. I thought I couldn't get anything that would surprise me or win me the lane, so I was very confident with my pick.
Did you expect Irelia in response?
Myrwn: Yes, he has played it a lot in SoloQ these weeks.
What is the thought process behind playing carrys on the toplane in a meta which seemed to be more tank oriented, as well as being a team where your identity resided more in your bottom lane?
Myrwn: In the bootcamp, in Madrid, I worked a lot with Zeph (Quentin Viguié) on this. The way I communicate with Elyoya (Javier Prades), whether I ask for resources or not, how to move people to play around me, but not in an extreme way like I'm Faker (Sang-hyeok Lee) or anything, you know? But in order to be able to play these games, especially against G2, that has helped me a lot. This type of champs don't necessarily need to attract teammates to the topside to extend their leads and many of them climb for free. For example, you can play for Zeri and Lulu and get them a huge advantage, but it's not mandator. In the bootcamp, in ten days I got used to it, and that’s one of the reasons why we have improved a lot our 2vs2 with Elyoya.
During the third game the enemy Nexus stood at 200 HP. Against KC, during the regular phase, after rushing to finish the game, you lose the fight and therefore lose the game. What has changed from one scenario to another? How do you stay cool and start the next game with a new mentality?
Myrwn: At the beginning of the day, we made it clear that we wanted to have fun, enjoy and not give up. I personally approach the games as if they were training, I'm not going to boom after a game. If I have to boom, I will when I don’t have anything left to lose.
It seems that you have set a trend and Sergen "BrokenBlade" Celik and Oscar "Oscarinin" Munoz are already starting to play Corki and Zeri in SoloQ. What do you have to say to them?
Myrwn: It's very normal, when BrokenBlade released the Zac in Winter, I also started practicing it like crazy. It's something normal that happens to all of us and obviously it makes me laugh. Regarding Oscar he knows I love him, but he will always be my son, but dad can never be fooled.
You are one step away from the World Championship and with it the possibility to play against international toplaners. Which ones are you especially looking forward to playing against?
Myrwn: Kiin (Kim Gi-in), he is my favorite toplaner. I always watch his pro views, he is the toplaner with whom I have learned the most. I've also been a mega fan of Zeus (Choi Woo-je) since before he was promoted to the LCK, and Bin (Chen Zebin) too. I think if I pick my Nidalee, Bin's hand is going to shake.
Many people criticize on social media your unconventional way of playing toplane. What role would you play if you were not a top laner?
Myrwn: I think I would play ADC, but the role I would like to play most would be support, I would be the most hated support in Europe. I would play Janna, Serafine, Milio, Neeko... These are the most hated supports in Europe, since they don't play hook champs. So yeah, I would be one of those.
You got tired of being abandoned on your island in top right?
Myrwn: Let's see, it's mainly because what I like the most in the game is teamfights, and as a support you can be in all of them you know? In the toplane my team often wins the fights and I don't even participate.
How many years do you think it would take you to return to the LEC as a Support?
Myrwn: I wouldn't know, a couple of years I think. It depends a lot on the coach, if I was with Melzhet I think in one year I could be back in the LEC.
Talking about roleswapping, now that there are going to be esports Olympics, are you ready for roleswap to midlane to play with Spain, and what would be your starting team?
Myrwn: Yes (laughs). I have always thought that if there were national teams I would like to play in the midlane.I think there is also a lack of level in the midlane and I think I can be the best in that position. I think I would adapt quickly and honestly speaking, after playing mid for one month, I would be the best Spanish midlaner, as hard as it may sound. I don't think that in one month I could destroy the LEC midlaners, but I usually play midlane too. It's not like I'm Chovy (Jeong Ji-hoon) on its prime, but well... I'm definitely ready to roleswap to midlane and bring the gold home for Spain.
And your ideal roster?
Myrwn: I want ten players :
-Oscarinin, TH3Antonio
-Razork, Elyoya
-Me, Hydra
-Supa, Flakked
-Alvaro, Oscure
If you could give one piece of advice to your 5 year old self, what would it be?
Myrwn: I think it would be to focus more on the day to day and trust the process."
