G2 had never lost its opening match since joining the European elite in 2016
G2 Esports is showing a strange face. Just two days into the 2025 LEC season, G2 has already broken one of its records: since the organization entered the European elite in 2016, they had never started a split with a loss. Moreover, the Samurais had never lost their first two games either.
This unfortunate record reflects a team still trying to find its footing after welcoming two new members during a highly eventful offseason. Against both Karmine Corp and BDS, G2 struggled to find answers. They absorbed less pressure, leaving Sergen "BrokenBlade" Çelik with less room to maneuver in the sidelane, and the map movements from the jungle/support duo in the early and midgame have so far been significantly less impactful. Rudy "SkewMond" Semaan has been more focused on follow-up plays, while Labros "Labrov" Papoutsakis has stayed closer to Steven "Hans Sama" Liv to secure a stable laning phase.
Caps wasn't enough
This has led to reduced control over neutral objectives. As for Rasmus "Caps" Winther, his level of play has remained consistent, benefiting from playmaking champions like Akali and Sylas. However, he has not been able to make an impact in skirmishes, which have been difficult to execute, especially when he is forced to take on the role of his team’s engager, a role hindered by the team's overall hesitancy.
While the team's synergy has yet to bloom and there’s still room for hope, the first warning bell may already be ringing. The LEC's unforgiving format eliminates the bottom two teams after just nine matches. G2 will need to find their footing quickly, starting tonight against SK Gaming at 8:15pm (CET), who also find themselves at 0-2 to begin the season.
