BLG lost only one best-of-five series this year, falling to Gen.G in the MSI final
The League of Legends 2024 World Championship kicks off in Berlin on the 25th of September. A total of 20 teams will compete to succeed T1 at the top of the Riot Games MOBA world hierarchy. On this occasion, Sheep Esports brings you a daily feature on one of the teams taking part. This September 23rd, the nineteenth episode of our series focuses on BiliBili Gaming, LPL first seed.
A new Emperor
At the start of the offseason, BLG made a significant roster change by acquiring Zhuo "knight" Ding to replace Zeng "Yagao" Qi in the mid-lane, effectively swapping midlaners with JD Gaming. Knight, widely regarded as one of the top midlaners in the world, brought an immediate upgrade to BLG's roster, boosting their potential to compete both domestically and internationally. And it showed. BLG dominated the whole 2024 season in the LPL, known to be one of the most competitive leagues with 17 teams battling for the top. The team emerged victorious in both Spring and Summer splits, with an especially commanding performance in the Summer. They succeeded JDG’s extremely dominant year and became the new emperor the LPL was waiting for.
During the Mid-Season Invitational, BLG showcased their prowess by advancing to the finals with relative ease. However, when they faced their fiercest rivals, Gen.G, they completely got outplayed, particularly in the bot lane and lost their first BO5 of the year 3-1. Gen.G's superiority left a mark on BLG, exposing gaps that they needed to address to reach the top tier of international competition.
In a bold move ahead of the Summer playoffs, BLG decided to bench their starting jungler, Peng "Xun" Li-Xun, and replaced him with the two-times MSI champion, Yan "Wei" Yang-Wei. This decision was made to bring more consistency and stability to the roster, aiming to ensure a stronger performance under pressure. The results spoke for themselves. Since Wei's arrival, BLG lost only four out of 23 games, reinforcing the team’s strength and reliability.
BLG cruised to another LPL championship in the Summer Split, facing little resistance from their competitors. The team has clearly been built with the goal of winning international titles, and they appear to be stronger than ever as they approach Worlds 2024. Their primary objective is redemption against Gen.G and to prove that their all-star roster has the determination and drive to capture their first international trophy. This year, BLG is focused on surpassing their 2023 performance, where they were eliminated by Weibo Gaming in the semifinals in an extremely tight series ending on an amazing play from Wang "Light" Guang-Yu around drake in game five. With a roster brimming with talent, their sights are set on going all the way and finally securing the title that has eluded them.
A roster built to win it all
BLG's roster is packed with talent across every role. Zhao "Elk" Jia-Hao and Luo "ON" Wen-Jun have solidified themselves as possibly the best botlane in the world, with Elk's exceptional mechanics and ON's aggressive playmaking often dictating the pace of their games. While ON's high-risk style has occasionally cost them leads, this duo was BLG's primary win condition throughout the Spring Split. In the jungle, Wei, a two-time MSI champion, integrated smoothly into the roster, making BLG more proactive and enabling stronger map control. His leadership has allowed the team to diversify their strategies beyond relying on bot lane.
In the top lane, Chen "Bin" Ze-Bin remains one of the world's elite, consistently performing at a high level in international competitions. His carry potential makes him a serious threat in any matchup, further boosting BLG's already high skill ceiling. Meanwhile, Knight, MVP of the Spring Split and Summer Finals, has been slightly less consistent than his teammates but enters the tournament determined to break his international curse. Though he lacks standout performances on the world stage, his raw talent remains undeniable.
Overall, BLG has evolved since MSI, with a more refined and versatile playstyle. Their ability to adapt, combined with their sky-high skill ceiling, firmly positions them as one of the strongest teams fighting for Worlds title this year.
